Feline Eye Problems | Symptoms & Causes

Do you suspect your cat may have an eye problem? Eye problems in cats are common but often
overlooked. A cat’s eye can become inflamed for a variety of reasons including allergies, foreign bodies, scratches, entropion – where the eyelashes turn in – infections, increased pressure, cataracts, cancer, autoimmune disease, or systemic viral diseases such as feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus.

If it looks like your cat is winking at you, it may not be a sign of affection. It is more than likely an eye problem. To spot eye problems, we must be vigilant. Some symptoms include squinting, winking, or pawing at the eye, inflamed reddened conjunctiva, protruding third eyelids, ocular discharge, dilated or unequal pupils, or erect whiskers that are pointing forward. Some feline eye
problems can be easily treated; however, many are very serious and should be promptly diagnosed by your veterinarian. Proper nutrition and diet play an important role in eye health.
